Mayflower Premium Alpaca is an exceptionally soft yarn, as it is spun from 100% fine baby alpaca from Peru. The yarn is available in the most beautiful colors, most of which have a mottled color play.
Premium Alpaca is part of the Mayflower Premium series, which consists of exclusive yarns of the highest quality, spun from natural fibers.
Peruvian baby alpaca is the finest and softest among alpaca fibers, and you can already sense how exceptionally soft Premium Alpaca actually is. However, the fluffy yarn not only has the softest and most delightful texture, but also a really high durability, so your knitting or crocheting can last for many years to come.
Baby alpaca from Peru is also known for being an extra warm fiber compared to other alpaca wool, just as the warm and insulating fiber also has high breathability. Premium Alpaca is therefore ideal for knitted and crocheted projects such as sweaters, vests, hats, scarves, and other warm and soft clothing. Alpaca does not contain lanolin. The yarn feels wonderful against the skin and is delightful to work with.
The soft baby alpaca has a slight weight, which gives the finished project a beautiful, natural drape with fine draping. The natural weight of the yarn also means that you need to be careful not to knit too loosely when knitting with 100% alpaca. Therefore, we recommend being cautious with, for example, brioche and garter stitch, which can grow and become longer.
With a Knitting gauge at 21 stitches x 30 rows, the fluffy Premium Alpaca can be used for a variety of different projects. However, the smooth surface and natural weight mean that you cannot simply replace, for example, 100% wool with 100% alpaca 1:1. Here, it becomes extra important to make a knitting or crochet swatch, which is washed according to the instructions before measuring.
